Why refer to Momwell

Care your patients will actually start

Maternal mental health specialists

A mom therapist, or a maternal mental health therapist, has received additional training or experience in working with issues that impact moms - like birth trauma, feeding struggles, infertility or trying to conceive, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, matrescence, and adjusting to motherhood.

Virtual, across the USA and Canada

Every session is virtual, so patients can attend from home, with a baby on their lap if that is the reality of the week. Momwell virtually serves the USA and Canada.

Insurance and direct billing

In the US, we are in-network with many major commercial insurance providers, including Aetna, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Capital BlueCross, Oscar, Oxford, and United Healthcare. In Canada, we direct bill to many major insurers via Telus eClaims.

Fast access to care

Our care team follows up within 24 to 48 hours of an intake, and Momwell therapists are currently booking out at approximately 1 to 3 weeks ahead or less. No months-long waitlist between your exam room and her first session.

When to refer

You are often the first person she tells

Six-week checks, prenatal visits, and well-baby appointments are where perinatal mental health struggles surface first. These are the conditions Momwell treats, with the signs described on our own clinical pages, in the language patients use.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that many moms experience within the first 12 months postpartum, though it can persist much longer without treatment.

Signs to listen for

  • Persistently sad, hopeless, or feeling numb
  • Overwhelmed by guilt, shame, or the belief you’re failing
  • Struggling to bond with your baby or enjoy everyday moments
  • Thinking, “I just don’t feel like myself anymore”

Baby blues typically last only 2-3 weeks postpartum and resolve on their own. If symptoms persist beyond this time, it may be postpartum depression.

Postpartum Anxiety

Postpartum anxiety is a common challenge that many moms face, often marked by excessive worry, fear, or racing thoughts.

Signs to listen for

  • Constantly worrying or feeling that something bad is going to happen
  • Experiencing racing thoughts that keep you from relaxing or sleeping
  • Avoiding certain activities or places because of fear or worry
  • Struggling with physical symptoms like a racing heart, nausea, or dizziness

Intrusive Thoughts

Intrusive thoughts are unwanted, distressing thoughts or images that pop into your mind. Common in the postpartum period, they can feel alarming but don’t reflect your desires or intentions.

Signs to listen for

  • Sudden, distressing thoughts that feel out of character
  • Thoughts or images about harm coming to your baby or loved ones
  • Avoiding certain activities, like diaper changes or going outside, because of your thoughts
  • Feeling stuck in a cycle of over-checking or trying to stop the thoughts

Birth Trauma

Birth trauma refers to emotional distress or mental health challenges following a difficult, unexpected, or traumatic childbirth experience. It can affect how you feel about yourself, your baby, or your birth story.

Signs to listen for

  • Feeling distressed or overwhelmed when thinking about the birth experience
  • Avoiding talking about or revisiting the birth story, or questioning whether or not to have another child
  • A sense of failure, guilt, or shame about how the birth unfolded

Postpartum Rage

Postpartum rage is an intense, often overwhelming anger that can arise after having a baby. It’s often a common but lesser-known symptom of postpartum depression and anxiety.

Signs to listen for

  • Snapping, yelling, or lashing out more than usual
  • Resentment or frustration toward a partner, baby, or other loved ones
  • Feeling emotionally exhausted and overwhelmed, like you’re at a breaking point
  • Rage alongside symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety

Before and beyond postpartum

Momwell also supports patients through preconception, pregnancy, loss, parenting, and the relationship shifts that come with all of it.
