At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of maternal adaptations during and after pregnancy and their effect on a women’s ability to exercise.

  • Discuss theoretical health concerns for exercise during pregnancy and
    up-to-date research literature.

  • Explain specific exercise goals for pregnant and postpartum women and how they differ from non-pregnant women.

  • Name safety exercise guidelines for pregnant women and new mothers.

  • Discuss maternal and fetal benefits of exercise.

  • Identify contraindications to exercise during pregnancy.

  • Recognize warning signs for discontinuing exercise during pregnancy.

  • Discuss recommendations for sports during pregnancy.

  • Name recommended nutritional guidelines for new and expectant moms.

  • Describe common discomforts of pregnancy and general recommendations for preventing as well as alleviating symptoms.

  • Explain positive teaching techniques.

  • Use suggested risk management tools.

  • Demonstrate selected exercises appropriate for expectant and new moms.

  • Develop a medically sound maternity fitness program.
