Motherwell® Mindful Pregnancy and Parenting Fitness Course
 

Pregnancy and childbirth are natural times in our lives to begin or deepen the practice of mindfulness. This unique opportunity is available to both men and women. Increasing self awareness is essential to a healthy pregnancy and positive childbirth experience as well as effective parenting. This holistic course is designed to address the many changes in mind, body and spirit that occur as a result of pregnancy and offers valuable tools for adjusting to these challenges in the most positive ways possible.

Whether working with pregnant women and new mothers in a group exercise class or one-on-one, this comprehensive course will provide you with everything you need to offer safe and effective fitness programs to this special group of women. Included in this course are suggestions for working with women in all settings using many familiar exercise formats including low impact aerobics, water, yoga, Pilates, weight training, as well as stroller and mom/baby exercises. You choose what works best for the women you serve!

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe maternal adaptations to pregnancy and postpartum.
  2. Explain how pregnancy affects the woman’s ability to exercise.
  3. Name American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) safety guidelines for exercise during and after pregnancy.
  4. Discuss benefits of maternal exercise for both the mother and the fetus.
  5. Identify symptoms of over-training in both the mother and the fetus.
  6. Recommend safe exercise and sports activities to new moms and moms-to-be.
  7. Discuss the science of mind-body health and how it relates to the childbearing year.
  8. Explain the role of stress before, during and after pregnancy as well as techniques for decreasing the negative impact of stress.
  9. Integrate effective breathing and relaxation techniques.
  10. Demonstrate exercises for relieving common discomforts during the childbearing year.
  11. Demonstrate positive teaching techniques.
  12. Discuss risk management issues for teaching a safe prenatal and postpartum class on land and in the water.
  13. Explain why self awareness is essential to effective parenting.
  14. Identify lifestyle choices that effect mind-body balance.
  15. Understand the benefits of relaxation and meditation.
  16. Discuss important nutritional concerns during the childbearing year.
  17. Recognize the importance of core strengthening exercises during the childbearing year.
  18. Demonstrate safe infant exercises.
